The First Cry

I put the book down, lay my head on the sofa cushion and let hot tears slide freely down my face. I had just finished Where the Red Fern Grows and my tender heart couldn't hold in the sadness.
It's the first book I remember crying over (I was probably about 10), and I think it remains one of the few.
A boy, his dogs, loyalty and adventure- this is the recipe for soaring joy and poignant tears.

I think I remember crying at Thumbelina but that was just b/c it scared me. I don't even remember what it's about. I blocked it from my memory I guess! Other than that, I think my first cry was probably the Anne books followed quickly by the Emily books. Lucy Maud gets me every time! You've only cried at a few?
Thumbelina was one of my favorite fairy tales! And it's Hans Christian Anderson, so of course that puts it up even higher in my esteem.
I don't remember many books bringing me to actual crying, though some have brought a tear or two. I don't recall Anne or Emily producing tears until I reread them as an adult. But seriously, stories about animals almost always bring tears. I went to see Marley and Me, and since I knew how it ended, I said to myself, "No tears in the theater." Umm, right. "Can someone hand me a tissue, please?" is more like it.
