Keepin' it real.

Here in the Sage Room, we keep it SO not real. I'm sorry, but it's true. We like our novels, fantasies and imaginative stories and have, to this point, chosen nothing but fiction for our book club picks.
One time we polled a few of our friends and found out very quickly why the three of us have gravitated toward starting a book club together. Many of our other friends prefer NON-fiction books over fiction ones.
We were astounded. Couldn't believe what we were hearing.
Then the war began and both sides took up their arms to defend what they like best. I think we won or maybe we were just evenly split. Whatever the outcome was, I have to say that while fiction is my preferred escape, I do enjoy a good "real" book every now and then. BUT it has to be about politics or history and preferably about the founding of our country. I guess you could say that's how I like to keep it real.
What's your poison? Fiction or non?

Well, since I'm in this book club, I guess you know what side I'm on. FICTION. But, I do like a good biography - because really it's still a story, it just happens to be true! Any other kind of non fiction would almost have to be an assignment to get me to read it. I usually keep it real by looking stuff up on the internet. : )
Since you asked.... I infinitely prefer non-fiction. I read to learn. As you say, fiction is more of an escape and I don't read to escape. That's what TV is for. Interestingly, biographies are, for me, the closest I get to FICTION! As in, per Anna, they are "still a story". I always think I should learn to read fiction, but I spend so much of my life reading and writing that when I do find the time and energy to read for pleasure, I feel the urgent need to have it be "useful."
(Also, I haven't joined a book club for the precise reason that most of them focus on fiction. Who are these friends of yours who read non-fiction? Can they form a book club with me? ;) )
Hi Erin,
Firstly, I promise I'm not spam. I'm a marketing associate with Turner Publishing, and we've recently released a book titled Historic Photos of Tulsa that I'm hoping you might want to check out in exchange for a possible review on your blog. The book is in a 10x10 coffee table format and presents a pictorial narrative of Tulsa using black & white photos culled from various archives, some of which have never been seen before. If you're interested, send me your address and I'll have one shipped out to you right away. If you have any questions, you can visit our website or shoot me an email.
Thanks so much,
Corinne

FICTION. Reading is my ONE guilty pleasure so I want to be caught up in the story. In fiction I can travel all over the world, to use the same word again, I can escape into the story whatever it might be. I don't feel it's a waste of time because it is MY time to relax and let my imagination take me on the author's journey.
It's kind of like asking a kid "What's your favorite part about school?" and the answer is inevitably "RECESS!" I love fiction because, like Cat said, it is my "me" time and often my only escape (and I can conveniently do it on my own couch without getting a babysitter!). But I do like nonfiction, too---kind of like I liked my favorite classes in school. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather be at recess!
I tend to read both almost equally. I also am usually reading 3-4 books at any given time, so I do both. I definitely get in a mood for one or the other from time to time though. For example, I just got a new fiction book today, & I know I'm going to rush through the non-fiction on I'm reading now so that I can get to it.
I've actually thought about this quite a bit, cause I can honestly say I don't remember the last time I finished a fiction book.
Maybe I don't know how to imagine.
Maybe I'm lame.
Maybe I'm a nerd.
Maybe I don't really know how to read.
I don't know.
All I know is that I love non-fiction...books on the world, politics, people, faith. As long as its real - I love it. I'm this way with movies too - my favorites are typically documentaries or films based on real events. I can't for the life of me get into fiction. Its ok if you hate me now. Just don't tell me.
E - you know me. What is this? What does this mean? Do I need therapy?
